This article, by the editor, appeared on the front page of the 2008 Jan/Feb issue:

Most book lovers think, “What could be better than a huge library right in Washington, D.C.?” But that’s not even all that you will find in this amazing place.

Of course, the Library of Congress IS known for it’s large variety of books (including the first ever published bible and other historically preserved books), but it also has beautiful architecture, detailed maps from a long, long time ago, and tons of history.

On the ceilings and walls are quotes related to books and writing as well as the names of classic authors. Even the elevators are ornately designed! And the reading rooms are fun to look at- with all the books and cozy tables, these are the best places to research just about anything.

Who’s in charge of this enormous library? Why, the Librarian of Congress of course! Specially selected by the president himself, this person has a very important job.

Particularly fascinating are the exhibits where not only can you see the real, live maps and books created what seems like forever ago, but you can also look at them up close using special technology.

A globe with all the constellations is fun- you can find your own star sign! Astrological maps will make you think deeply about the universe, and what the ancient people saw when they looked up at the night sky.

Indeed, a lovely weekend trip would be a visit to the Library of Congress- it’s hard not to be interested in everything you will discover!
